It’s definitely a spot to check out. My camping spots were both in the National Forrest rather than a State Park. The general rule (with occasional exceptions) in the National Forrest is that you can camp wherever you want (within reason of course, you want to stay close to existing roads so as to not leave too much of an impact, but there are often little-used dirt roads one can use to get away from the highways). Both of the spots I picked actually had little fire rings made of rocks that made it obvious others had been there before me. Most places in the NF you can stay for up to 14 days for free just camping wherever. Sometimes their official campgrounds have small fees.

There’s also two State Parks in the area I recommend highly: Beaver’s Bend SP in Oklahoma and Queen Wilhelmina SP is on the Talimena scenic drive in Arkansas- they have a lodge I’ve always wanted to stay at, but also RV camping.

I understand that feeling of wanting an approved place- I’ve felt the same when I’m staying in a town or city. I come from an area of the country with lots of public lands -National Forrest, BLM, etc, where it’s just kind of a free-for-all so I feel comfy making my ‘home’ some random spot in the woods. Plus in a lot of those areas, one is unlikely to see another soul that could enforce rules if there were any.

And it sounds like a really cool place. I’m definitely adding it to my list if I ever make it out of Florida. (I will, I know, just feeling like I’m spending a lot of time here right now!) I’m impressed by your initiative, too, in just finding a nice spot and camping there. Are you allowed to camp anywhere in the Oklahoma parks or are you just guessing that it’ll be okay? I’ve been too anxious to camp anyplace that I didn’t know was an “approved” camping site so far, but I’d like to get more adventurous.
